WHAT IS SAMADHAN???
An
NGO (Non Governmental Organisation) started In 1981 in
New Delhi with the specific aim of working with children
with mental retardation and their families.
LOCATION: New
Delhi.
OUR FOCUS
Families living in conditions
of poverty with children who are mentally handicapped or at risk
of becoming developmentally delayed if intervention strategies are not
easily available. Our concern are those families living
in areas of deprivation such as slums or Camps where migrants
from other States find living quarters or Resettlement
Colonies, where slum dwellers have been “ resettled“
in either land or housing provided by the Government.
WHY THIS FOCUS??
Families migrate
from villages in search of employment or a better life style. But
in big cities like Delhi , they often find their problems aggravated rather
than solved particularly if they left their villages in search of support
and help for a child with disability or mental handicap.
Forced to live in low quality
housing , in unsanitary and unhygienic conditions and often
with little or no civic amenities, these families soon fall prey to all
the environmental hazards of life in a big city .
A
vicious cycle is started which keeps them in a never ending perpetual
bind. Some of the men have basic schooling
but most of the women are illiterate. So, with no education,
job opportunities are extremely bleak . This leads to less
money available for food, leading to ill health and malnutrition which
again impacts on their capacity to seek and hold down a job.
THE TRAGEDY IS THAT
POVERTY IMPACTS ON THE INFANT , THE YOUNG CHILD AND THE WOMAN
MOST. IF THE CHILD IS MENTALLY HANDICAPPED IT IS LAST ON THE LIST
OF PRIORITIES.
THE
CYCLE OF PERPETUAL BONDAGE
THEIR STORY IS TYPICAL
OF THE THOUSANDS OF
MIGRANT WORKERS IN
NEW DELHI
